GERMAN EXCHANGE - 2024
In mid-October, a group of nineteen German language learners embarked on an extraordinary
cultural and linguistic exchange to Germany. These dedicated students, who had been diligently
learning German for just over two years, set of with the primary objective of enhancing their
language skills. However, after an immersive nine day trip, they discovered so much more—forging
deep friendships, enjoying rich cultural experiences, and creating memories that would undoubtedly
last a lifetime.
The group's journey began with two captivating days in Munich. They explored the city's magniocent
landmarks, standing in awe before the Rathaus in Marienplatz. At the Eisbach river, they watched as
surfers navigated the waves in the centre of the city. From the historic Frauenkirche, they took in a
panoramic view of the city, identifying key landmarks throughout the city. A well-deserved break at
the legendary Hofbräuhaus allowed them to immerse themselves in authentic Bavarian atmosphere.
The highlight of their Munich experience was a visit to the Allianz Arena, where they momentarily felt
the excitement of professional football, imagining the roars of passionate fans.
The journey to our partner school, Lobkowitz Realschule in Neustadt, was a mix of nervous
anticipation and excitement. Initial quiet whispers quickly transformed into joyous laughter as
students connected with their German counterparts. That evening, they came together in
enthusiastic support of the local ice hockey team, the Blue Devils where they roared on the local
team together.
The subsequent week was a whirlwind of shared experiences—olled with infectious laughter,
budding friendships, and plenty of singing. Excursions to Regensburg, Amberg, and a local television
station provided unique insights into German life. Yet, the most profound moments emerged from
their immersion into everyday school and family life, turning new partners into lifelong friends.
Now in its second year, the school's partnership with Lobkowitz Realschule has already demonstrated
remarkable potential. The collegiality and warm hospitality experienced have been truly exceptional,
promising many more successful exchanges in the future. This transformative opportunity would
not have been possible without the crucial support of the Erasmus+ grant.
While the memories of the October adventure remain cherished, the group is already eagerly
anticipating the reciprocal visit of their German friends to Carnew in March. This is a true testament
to the powerful bonds of international friendship and cultural understanding.
